October 25th,1971 - Pablo Casals

Long identified with causes of peace and human rights, the Spanish born cellist Pablo Casals was as much a humanitarian as he was a brilliant musician. On October 25, 1971 at the United Nations, the 94-year old tireless laborer for human understanding conducted an impassioned musical tribute to peace. Casals had to be virtually lifted into the conductor's chair, but once there, with baton in hand as music filled the hall, he gained strength, shed decades.
