苹果Mac OS X系统

苹果电脑大家都很熟悉，它“才貌双全”的操作系统真是令人神往。但是大家有没有注意过苹果的操作系统代号？苹果机现在的操作系统是Mac OS X（X是指第十代的意思），到目前为止十代操作系统有过六次主要的更新，而每次更新苹果都会给它们一个代号，从10.0起的代号分别为：Cheetah（猎豹）、Puma（美洲狮）、Jaguar（美洲虎）、Panther（黑豹）、Tiger（老虎）、Leopard（美洲豹），以及2009年8月26日最新推出的10.6：Snow Leopard（雪豹）。大家可以发现都是big cats（大型猫科动物）呢！所以也有很多人在猜想，下一个代号会是什么？Lion？Lynx？你猜呢？

说到“代号”，英文叫做code name。A code name is a word or phrase used to refer secretly to a specific person, group, project, or plan of action.（Code name是用于秘密指代特定人员、组织、项目或行动计划的字词），常被用于军事行动或间谍组织中。例如美国在二战时期实施的研制原子弹计划的code name叫做"Manhattan Project"（曼哈顿计划）。除此之外，code name也可表示an internal name given to a product under development（给开发中的产品所起的内部名称），就是像上面所讲到的苹果系统的代号。

一般给产品起代号时，都会围绕着一个主题或一条线索。苹果热衷于大型猫科动物，而微软则是执着于地名。Windows 98的代号是Memphis（美国孟菲斯），Windows XP的代号是Whistler（位于加拿大温哥华），Windows Vista的代号是Longhorn（同样位于加拿大温哥华），而Windows 7的代号为Vienna（奥地利维也纳）。

Cheetah 猎豹

On March 24, 2001, Apple released Mac OS X v10.0 (internally codenamed Cheetah). The initial version was slow, incomplete, and had very few applications available at the time of its launch.
2001年3月24日，苹果发布了Mac OS X v10.0（代号“猎豹”）。最初的这版运转速度慢，系统不完整，推出时能够使用的应用程序非常少。

Puma 美洲狮

Later that year on September 25, 2001, Mac OS X v10.1 (internally codenamed Puma) was released. It had better performance and provided missing features, such as DVD playback.
同年晚些时候，在9月25日，Mac OS X v10.1（代号“美洲狮”）发布。它的表现有了改善，且补充了之前缺少的功能，比如DVD录音再生。

Jaguar 美洲虎

On August 23, 2002, Apple followed up with Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar", the first release to use its code name as part of the branding. It brought great performance enhancements and a sleeker look.
2002年8月23日，苹果接着发布了Mac OS X v10.2“美洲虎”，首次将代号作为了品牌的一部分。它在性能表现上有了巨大的提升，还拥有更时髦的外表。

Panther 黑豹

Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" was released on October 24, 2003. In addition to providing much improved performance, it also incorporated the most extensive update yet to the user interface.
Mac OS X v10.3“黑豹”于2003年10月24日发布。除了在性能上有了提高外，还对用户界面做了最大的提升。

Tiger 老虎

Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" was released on April 29, 2005. Apple stated that Tiger contained more than 150 new features.
Mac OS X v10.4“老虎”于2005年4月29日发布。苹果公司称“老虎”包含了超过150个新功能。

Leopard 美洲豹

Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard" was released on October 26, 2007. It was called by Apple "the largest update of Mac OS X". It brought more than 300 new features.
Mac OS X v10.5“美洲豹”于2007年10月26日发布。它被苹果称为是“Mac OS X系统提升最大的一次”。它带来了300个以上的新功能。

Snow Leopard 雪豹

Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" was released on August 28, 2009. Rather than delivering big changes to the appearance and end user functionality like the previous releases of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard focuses on "under the hood" changes, increasing the performance, efficiency, and stability of the operating system.
Mac OS X v10.6“雪豹”于2009年8月28日发布。此前新产品的发布都是在外观和终端用户功能性上做出重大改变，而“雪豹”却是注重改善“后台”，包括提高操作系统的性能表现、效率和稳定性。
