October 14, 1947 - The Bell X-1 Rocket plane teams with Chuck Yeager, a former fighter pilot to break the sound barrier. For years, many aviators believed that man was not meant to fly faster than the speed of sound. All that changed when Yeager was transported from California Army Base in a carrier containing, Glamorous Glennis, designed with a new kind of rocket engine and a fuselage streamlined to reduce turbulence. Within minutes, Glamorous Glennis accelerated to more than 600 miles an hour and broke the envelope. Yeager's feat loomed larger in the following decades as astronauts prepared to fly rockets far beyond the sound barrier.
