October 11th,1962 - Pope John XXIII.

Pope John XXIII opens Vatican Council. Pope John XXIII reached the papacy from humble, peasant beginnings. His simplicity and disregard for the clutter of protocol earned him wide appeal and he quickly became known as the sympathetic pope. He was a powerful force for the modernization of the church and he created the first African born, the first Japanese, and the first Filipino Cardinals in the church's history. He revived a long neglected tradition by celebrating Christmas Mass with the inmates of Regina Coeli Prison in Rome. Pope John convened the first ecumenical council in 92 years - bringing greater unity to between Catholics and the world - this point in time, October 11, 1962.
