On September 4th, Mark Spitz.

On September 4th, 1972, 22-year-old Mark Spitz won his seventh Olympic Gold medal in the games of Munich. No other athelete had ever dominated the games so completely or won so many medals. Spitz, a native Californian, won the gold in both the men's 100m and 200m meter butterfly events as well as the 100m and 200m meter freestyle events. His 3 other medals were won for 2 freestyle relay races and one medley race. Spitz was already setting world records in butterfly races at the age of seventeen, though he failed to win any individual medal in the 1968 Olympics. Overall in a 5-year career, Spitz set 27 individual records for freestyle and butterfly events.
