Simon Bishop on solutions to energy poverty
EarthSky
[en]You are listening to Simon Bishop of the Shell Foundation and he is talking about energy poverty – a lack of access to basic energy needs.[/en
[en]Simon Bishop: So, for example, if you take that issue of half the world’s population, cooking on open fires and traditional stoves, there are stoves out there called ‘clean cook stoves’ – that dramatically reduce both fuel use and emissions. And the great thing about them is they are potential self-financing solution to this health, poverty, energy, climate change issue because people can pay the roughly $20 price tag for the stoves through the fuel savings they make over the first six months. So it’s a self-financing solution.[/en
[en]Bishop said his team looks for solutions that can scale up, or be replicated all over the world. He spoke of Husk Power Systems in India.
[en]Simon Bishop: This organization takes rice husks, which are waste material, and it turns them into electricity. This is a huge step forward for those local populations.[/en
