This Day in History - Aug 7th Starring - US Marines

Japan's first land defeat in World War II occurred at Guadalcanal, one of the Solomon Islands located east of New Guinea. Japan was building an air base there with designs on attacking Australia bases vital to the launching of the United States offensive in the South Pacific. The strategic importance of the island was evidenced by six months of naval battles in its surrounding seas. On August 7, 1942, 10,000 Marines landed on Guadalcanal and took over the air base. But the Japanese quickly re-infiltrated the island and fought a hellish jungle battle that left 24,000 of their soldiers dead. The first land victory over Japan took seven months and almost 1,800 American lives. And Tokyo was still three thousand miles away.
