On July 28, 1923 - The worst Earthquake in modern history rocks Japan.

Earthquakes have terrorized mankind since the beginnings of recorded history. Even now, it remains difficult to assess their damage, not only in loss of lives and property but also their effects on water and, food supplies, diseases and sheer emotional trauma. Primitive man believed earthquakes were caused by monsters. The ancient Greeks believed storms and seas beneath the Earth's crust were responsible. The worst quake in modern history occurred in Japan in 1923. It killed anestimated 300,000, injured 500,000 and left 2.5 million homeless. Though far fewer died, the most celebrated quake happened in 1906 as fires broke out and destroyed almost the entire city of San Francisco.
