July 21, 1970 - Aswan High Dam is completed.

The Aswan High Dam was completed on July 21st, 1970, and inaugurated by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Soviet President Podgorny six months later. Sadat's predessor Gamel Abdul Nassar, had enlisted Soviet aid for the project through low interest loans and much technical assistance for more than 10 years. The dam's 12 giant turbines were designed to provide enough power to make Egypt self-sufficient electricity. And in controlling the waters of the Nile, the High Dam guards against drought and flooding. However the disruption of the Nile's flow has destroyed vital mineral deposits and fishing industries and also spread disease. And archeologists have had to fight to save ancient monuments from rapid erosion.
