Leslie Cheung, who has died aged 46, enjoyed a double life as one of Hong Kong's most popular entertainers in two different fields: pop music and, latterly, films.

Throughout his screen career often played sexually ambiguous characters. His best known role was in Farewell, My Concubine (1993), as a closet homosexual in a Peking Opera troupe who specialised in female roles and was drawn to his longtime heterosexual friend.

Ironically, his fate mirrored the climax of his last film, Inner Senses, in which he was tempted by the ghost of an ex-girlfriend to jump to his death.
