Ouly 14, 1789 - The French Revolution begins with the storming of the Bastille.

Every year, the French celebrate Bastille Day with military parades and fireworks to commemorate the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a royal fortress on the eastern side of Paris. Revolutionaries gave it an inflated notoriety by handing out pamphlets declaring it a state prison. On July 14, 1789, workers in the Faubourg Saint Antoine stormed the fortress under gunfire, butchered the Governor, and dismantled the Bastille, stone by stone. Though they claimed they were releasing prisoners, their real purpose was to get guns. This supreme gesture of defiance triggered the 3-year reign of terror in which Bourbon King Louis XVI was overthrown and some 1,000 people, including Marie Antoinette, were guillotined.
