Hurricane Alex has made landfall about 100 miles south of the Mexico-Texas border. The storm spawned two tornadoes around Brownsville, Texas and major flooding in South Padre Island. Waves up to nine feet were reported on the island’s beaches.

Polices say they are reopening an investigation into allegation by a Portland massage therapist that former Vice President Al Gore groped her at a hotel in 2006. A Gore’s spokeswoman says the former VP emphatically denies making unwanted sexual advances. The Portland Police Bureau did not say why it’s reopening the investigation.

Joran van der Sloot has been indicted in Alabama on wire fraud and extortion charges. Authorities say Van der Sloot tried to extort a quarter of a million dollar from Natalee Holloway’s mother. Van der Sloot is the prime suspect in Holloway’s disappearance on a graduation trip to Aruba in 2005. He also faces murder charges in Peru.

The free agent signing period in the NBA has started and some of the game’s biggest stars are being pursued by a number of clubs. Topping the list is current Cleveland Cavalier LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and Dirk Nowitzki are also free agents. All are expected to sign contracts worth about $17 million a year.
