President Barack Obama blames political posturing and special interest wrangling for not making headway on immigration policy. Obama wants to fix the system using more than just what he calls “fences and border patrols.”

Prosecutors say one of the suspects in the alleged Russian spy ring confessed, saying he used a fake name and worked for Russia’s intelligence service. The country also paid for his place of residence.

At least two people are dead in northern Mexico after drenching rains brought on by Hurricane Alex. In Texas, officials reported no injuries or major damage. Alex’s weakening to a tropical storm.

The Senate opens its doors for the final time for Robert Byrd, the Senator from West Virginia who died at 92, serving longer than any other in history. He was brought in the Senate chamber, letting colleagues and the public pay their respects.
