On April 29, 1945, Dachau is liberated.

The Allied liberation of Nazi concentration camps in April, 1945 revealed horrors far beyond the world's imaginings. Piles of corpses were found at Buchenwald, where the furnaces for the human incinerators had run out of coal. An estimated 7-8 million passed through these camps of whom fewer than a third survived. At least 3 million Jews were starved, tortured and killed in the camps and some 2 million more murdered elsewhere. The extermination of Jews, especially of women and children, had intensified in the final years of the war. With Allied forces closing in fast, Hitler had tried desperately to have all camps blown up and burned to eliminate evidence of the atrocities. They were burned - but not before the sickening truth was discovered.
