On April 15, 1912, the SS Titanic sinks.

When it first left port at Southampton, England, the S.S. Titanic barely escaped a collision with the ocean liner, New York. 2,340 passengers and crew remained undaunted, however, as the Titanic continued on its maiden voyage toward New York City. The regal ocean liner was regarded as the finest ever built, not only for its stately interiors but also its highly vaunted waterproof compartments. But on April 15, 1912, some 450 miles from Newfoundland, the Titanic sped into an iceberg, ripping a massive hole in its unsinkable frame. Within 2 hours, it sank, drowning 1,595. 745 survived, most of them were women and children, accorded priority on lifeboats, too scarce for the rest.
