[en]The Dexterity of Poetry[/en][cn]诗歌之灵性[/cn] [en]With the young of both sexes, Poetry is, like love, a passion; but, for much the greater part of those who have been proud of its power over their minds, a necessity soon arises of breaking the pleasing [w]bondage[/w]; or it relaxes of itself; —the thoughts being occupied in domestic cares, or the time [w=engross]engrossed[/w] by business. Poetry then becomes only an occasional recreation; while to those whose existence passes away in a course of fashionable pleasure, it is a species of luxurious amusement. In middle and declining age, a scattered number of serious persons resort to poetry, as to religion, for a protection against the pressure of [w]trivial[/w] employments, and as a [w]consolation[/w] for the [w=affliction]afflictions[/w] of life. And, lastly, there are many, who, having been [w=enamour]enamoured[/w] of this art in their youth, have found leisure, after youth was spent, to cultivate general literature; in which poetry has continued to be comprehended as a study.[/en][cn]对青年男女来说,诗歌如同爱情一样,是一种激情。

How happy is the little stone ——Emily Dickinson How happy is the little stone ——Emily Dickinson How happy is the little stone. That rambles in the road alone, And doesn't care about careers, And exigencies never fears—— Whose coat of elemental brown A passing universe put on; And independent as the sun, Associates or glows alone, Fulfilling absolute decree in casual simplicity.

The mountain and the squirrel ——Ralph Waldo Emerson The mountain and the squirrel ——Ralph Waldo Emerson The Mountain and the Squirrel Had a quarrel; And the Mountain called the Squirrel 'Little Prig.' Bun replied, You are doubtless very big; But all sorts of things and weather Must be taken in together, To make up a year And a sphere. And Think it no disgrace To occupy my place. If I'm not so large as you, You are not so small as I! And not half so spry. I'll not deny you make A very pretty squirrel track; Talents differ; All is well and wisely put; If I cannot carry forests on my back, Neither can you crack a nut.
