Lead researcher Professor Jessica Tracy said: 'While showing a happy face is considered essential to friendly social interactions, including those involving sexual [w]attraction[/w] - few studies have actually examined whether a smile is, in fact, attractive. 'This study finds that men and women respond very differently to [w]display[/w]s of emotion, including smiles.' More than 1,000 adult participants rated the [w]sexual[/w] attractiveness of hundreds of images of the opposite sex. These photos included [w]universal[/w] displays of happiness (broad smiles)， pride (raised heads, puffed-up chests) and shame (lowered heads, averted eyes). The researchers found that women were least attracted to smiling, happy men - in contrast to men, who were most attracted to women who looked happy. Overall, the researchers said, men rank women more attractive than women rank men. Study co-author Alec Beall said: 'It is important to remember that this study explored first-impressions of sexual attraction to images of the opposite sex. Sharks are completely [w]colour-blind[/w] and only see things clearly if they are mostly light or dark, scientists have claimed. The U.S. Navy has conducted tests that suggested sharks were able to see yellow most clearly. The tests had been to see what would be the best colour for the [w=lifejacket]lifejackets[/w] that pilots wear in case they have to [w]eject[/w] and [w]splash[/w] down in the ocean. Professor Hart said it was more the high contrast of yellow, not the colour itself, that would increase the [w]visibility[/w] for sharks. He said: 'It may be possible to design swimming [w]attire[/w] and surf craft that have a lower visual contrast to sharks and are therefore less attractive to them.'
