A heated hearing on Capitol Hill Wednesday on domestic spying. Members of Congress threatened to curb the government's surveillance authority, saying Congress never intended to allow the National Security Agency to gather and store millions of Americans’ phone records. 
 
Firefighters are bracing for an intense day battling a wildfire in the mountains of southern California. Temperatures are expected to get as high as 105 in the area where the fire has burned seven homes and led to the evacuation of dozens. 
 
Rolling Stone magazine is defending its upcoming cover story on Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. This comes as two New England based retailers say they won't carry the issue. Editors say the story falls within the traditions of journalism, tracing how a bright kid with a charming future became a monster
 
And it seems Queen Elizabeth II is getting a bit impatient as she waits for the birth of her third great-grandchild. The monarch said Wednesday that she hopes Prince William’s wife Kate gives birth soon as her annual summer holiday in Scotland is about to begin.
