Wildfires have scorched tens of thousands of acres in West Texas. Flames destroyed dozens of homes and forced evacuations in some towns. One girl died in a chain reaction highway crash, caused by thick smoke.

A 5-month-old boy was the first victim of New Zealand’s earthquake laid to rest. Officials say the death toll from last week’s devastating quake in Christchurch has climbed to 148, more people are still missing. A multi-national 600-person team is still combing through the rubble.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station will go for a spacewalk today. The team will move a broken ammonia pump to a better location, installing an extension cable and perform some other space chores. Shuttle Discovery is on its last mission to the ISS.

And Hollywood royalty crowned British royalty with four Oscars. “The King’s Speech” took four statues including Best Picture, Best Actor for Colin Firth, Best Director and Best Original Screen Play. The boxing drama “The Fighter” claimed both supporting acting honors.
