地表可见的最大陨石坑就在南非，整个陨石坑的直径达到了300公里（相当于上海到南京的距离了），据说当时创造它的那颗陨石有山那么大。

还好，这次撞击是发生在人类诞生以前，不然的话可能就是灭绝性的事件了。

The world’s largest visible crater is in South Africa. Around 2,030 million years ago a meteor the size of a mountain (about 10km across) fell to earth in South Africa’s Free State making a crater 300km across; it is the oldest crater made by either a comet or meteorite and reportedly the site of the largest energy release in history. In 2015, scientists claimed to have found a bigger crater (around 400km wide) underground in the Austrlian outback, although it is not visible on the earth’s.
南非有世界上最大的可见陨石坑。大约二十亿三千万年前，一颗山那么大的流星（直径约10公里）落在南非自由邦之上，形成了一个直径300公里的陨石坑；这是由彗星或陨石形成的最古老的陨石坑，而且据报道，这是历史上最大的能量释放点。2015年科学家表示，在澳大利亚内陆的地下发现了一个更大的陨石坑（约400公里宽），不过这个陨石坑在地球表面看不到。
