1. 初步

相信类似"APPLY NOW"或"APPLY ONLINE"醒目字眼大家都能看到。点这些连接就是打开在线申请的。(有的学校是在研究生院招生网页上，有的是学院招生网页上，比如College of Engineering； 还有的是在各个系自己的网页上)

一般正式填表前要注册。第一次用的时候(If you are entering a new online application)要选择"Create new account"，然后填自己的用户名和密码，确认成功后就可以用这个登陆了。今后每次都用它登陆(If you have an applicationin progress)， 也就是说一次填不完， 保存好下次可以继续。

2. 开始填表

登陆进去一般各个学校的申请步骤都写的很详细。 一般来说，各个学校的网申步骤可能不尽相同，菜单选项设置也不太一样。所以不方便拿某个学校说明。但是大概几个方向还是差不多的。这里把填表中经常需要的项目列出来。从内容上分成大致以下几个方面：

(0) Choose your graduate program 选择要申请的方向
(1) Applicant's Biographical Data (Contact information and Personal Background) 个人资料
(2) Enrollment Information (Institutions attended and degrees received) 教育背景资料
(3) Report tests taken 就是TOEFL，GER，TSE等等考试成绩
(4) Letters of Recommendation 推荐信
(5) List courses in which you are currently enrolled/RESUME/Publications/Awards 列出一些曾经学过的科/简历/发表文章/奖项
(6) Employment history 工作背景
(7) Personal Statement 陈述
(8) Financial Aid/Financial Support和International Applicant Financial Information 国际学生财力证明
(9) 其他项目
(10) PAYMENT(Application FEE) 交申请费

通常所有的步骤都是独立的，你可以一个一个填(有的学校只能这样)，或者不按顺序完成。每个步骤填好后页面下方都会有个"SAVE"按钮，把当前填好的页保存起来。

下面就一个一个说：

(0) Choose your graduate program 选择要申请的方向

这个步骤不是每个学校都有。如果有的话，你需要填你要申请的系的名称， 比如Computer Engineering。有的学校还会问的更细，比如AREA。
Term/Year you will enroll： 如果秋季就选FALL 2006
Will you enroll： (FULL TIME or PART TIME) 选full-time
还有很多学校问曾经跟拿位教授联系过， 比如：
Have you contacted these professors or any other of our faculty? Yes/ No
If yes, whom?
如果你套过某个人，可以把他名字写上

(1) Applicant's Biographical Data (Contact information and Personal Background) 个人资料

这步一般包括以下几点：
Salutation： Select Mr Mrs Ms Dr 。
Gender： 选M或F
Last/Family Name ：
First/Given Name ：
Middle Name： (If used) 中国人没有，不用写
Other names which may appear on your academic record：如果成绩单或学历上有过其他名字，要注明
Race/Ethnicity：这个是问种族， 
Social Security Number(SSN) ：这个是美国境内用的身份证号，不填
Country of Birth：
Birth City：选CHINA
Country of Citizenship：选CHINA
If not a US citizen, are you a Permanent Resident of the United States? 选NO
[Contact Information]
一般有几个表，一个是Mailing Address，一个是Permanent Address，有的还有工作地址什么的。如果都是一个地址，就不用填写后面了。 (if different from mailing address，才填)。

Street：
City：
State/US Territory/Possession：这个是选在美国哪个洲。
Province or Country(Non USA/Canada only)：省
Postal Code：或ZIP：就是中国的邮编
Telephone： 这里一般留的是美国的数位(xxx-xxx-xxxx)，中国的挤不下，就不填了。如果没有数位限制，就填上自己的电话。(Telephone Number Country Code： 中国填86)，比如北京的就是： 86-10-xxxxxxxx。
另外还有Other Contact Information，比如EMAIL，FAX等。
