Part 2 & 3

Part 2题目

Describe a language you want to learn (not English)

You should say:

What it is

How you would learn it

Where you would learn it

And why you want to learn the language.

I’d like to learn Japanese if I have the chance. I think the best way of learning a foreign language is to actually live in that country for a certain period of time, and once you immerse into the environment, it is a lot easier for you to pick up a new language. So if I can, I’d like to apply for a short-term language course in Japan and study there.

I like to watch Japanese animation and drama, but my Japanese is too limited to understand the content, so basically I have to rely on subtitles and that’s quite inconvenient. If a certain program is not translated, then I won’t be able to watch it. So that’s the primary reason that I want to learn Japanese. On the other hand, it’s always good to learn a new language as it can sharpen your mind or even bring you some opportunities. For example if I can master the language well, I might have a chance to work in Japan or the related business.

Eg: He moved to New Orleans so as to immerse himself in the musical atmosphere.

Eg: Where did you pick up your English?

Eg: The dialogue is in Spanish, with English subtitles.

Eg: He will need to sharpen his diplomatic skills in order to work with Congress.

Part 3题目

1. What can people do to learn a second language?

There are many ways for people to learn a second language. We can attend a class and learn it from a teacher; we can join a study group and learn it from peers; or we can download an application and learn it by ourselves.

Eg: His engaging personality made him popular with his peers.

Eg: The service works as a software application that is accessed via the internet.

2. Is it popular to learn a second language in your country?

Yes, very popular. English has always been the first choice if people want to learn a second language. And Japanese, Spanish are also getting more and more popular as bilateral communication are enhanced. Second language learning has now become a compulsory course in many schools.

EgBilateral economic and trade relations between Turkey and the United States will continue to develop.

EgHe believes that the study of history should be compulsory in school.

3. What are the difficulties of learning a new language?

Learners may first of all have difficulty in learning the pronunciation as it can be quite different from their mother tongue. In addition, they have to remember a large number of vocabulary and grammar in order to structure the language properly. And that can be quite painful.

EgMother tongue education and learning languages were also highlighted as a means to foster dialogue and openness towards others.

EgLike an awkward teenager, however, Facebook is finding that growing up can be painful.

4. What’s the best way to learn a new language?

I think the best way of learning a foreign language is to actually live in the country for a certain period of time. You can quickly fit in with the life by talking to the locals, watching local TV programs or reading books in the native language. And once you immerse into the environment, it is a lot easier for you to pick up a new language.

The chart shows the changes in the percentage of households with cars in a European country between 1971 and 2001. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

The bar chart clearly illustrates the percentage of families in a European country in terms of private car ownership from 1971 to 2001. It is obvious that the ratio of households without cars declined continuously in the three decades, while families that held one or more cars saw a more vigorous growth.

To be specific, households with no cars accounted for over 51% in 1971, the highest percentage in the 30 years, and since then, the figure decreased to 41% in 1981 and 30% in 1991, followed by a drop to 28% in 2001. Compared with the proportions before 1980s, families with one car experienced a rising trend especially in the last two decades when the percentage jumped from a little over 30% in 1971 and 1981 to more than 45% in 2001. For the households that owned two or more cars, the ratio fluctuated during the 30 years from the lowest 15% in 1971 to the highest 28% in both 1981 and 2001.

Overall, most families did not have cars between 1971 and 1981, and those with only one car ranked the second place. But from 1991 to 2001, the situation reversed as a majority of households owned one car, with the highest percentage of 50% in 1991.

in terms of:   ……而言

vigorous: adj.

account for:   占有

reverse: v.

In many countries nowadays, more and more women have full-time jobs as men. There is a logic that men and women should share the housework tasks equally. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, the majority of women have jobs, which means housework does not come with a gender anymore. To maintain the harmony in a family, it is probably best for couples to share the domestic work equally.

Although it is our traditional norm that defines women’s responsibility for the housework, as women’s involvement in the workforce increases, it is reasonable that husbands should take responsibility to share the domestic duties. If women who are employed on full time basis outside still need to do the lion’s share of the chores at home, they are more likely to feel upset and stressful about unfinished tasks, which will adversely affect marital satisfaction and household happiness. By contrast, many researches have shown that men doing more chores can help strengthen marriages and protect against divorce.

While it sounds like a common sense that both men and women need to devote equal time to domestic chores, the fact is that the amount of time women spend on routine housework tasks still dwarfs the time spent on non-routine domestic matters carried out by men. In such families, many husbands tend to reflect that it will make them feel a loss of identity to assist their wife in doing household chores. This feeling threatens their passions and makes them unwilling to participate in household tasks such as raising children and cleaning. However, it should be well recognised that the house is shared by both partners, and there should not be a reason why husband should feel ashamed to do chores around the house.

In conclusion, sharing the housework evenly is a surefire way to keep a harmonious relationship between the couples, and it is believed that the gender gap in housework will disappear someday.

workforce: n.

the lion’s share: 大部分

dwarf: v.
