1. in the cards

这里的card不是赌博打牌，可以看作是用来算命的塔罗牌，如果别人说某件事“in the cards（英式口语里是“be on the cards”）”，那么就是说话的人认为这件事情十有八九要发生。

"So you think they'll get married next year?" "I think it's in/on the cards."
“那么你认为他们明年会结婚吗？”“我看很有可能。”

 

2. sth knows no bounds

复数bounds形容（法律或社会的）界限；限制；限定区域。

beyond reasonable bounds
超出正常的范围

beyond/outside the bounds of acceptable behavior
令人无法接受

sth knows no bounds指的是（某人的某特质）没有限量，无限。

Her generosity knows no bounds.
她极其慷慨大方。

 

3. stretch

stretch的意思是超过限度；过分；离谱；破例。

His idea may be a stretch, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.
他的主意可能有点儿夸大其词，但并不是完全没有可能。

补充，put two and two together and make five可以表示“听风就是雨”，也有牵强的意思哦。

 

4. put your foot down

put your foot down这里的意思是“利用…的权力制止”：

When she started borrowing my clothes without asking, I had to put my foot down.
她开始连问都不问就把我的衣服借走的时候，我不得不出面制止。

另外，put your foot down还有“踩油门，加速行驶”的意思。
