Viewing Qian-tang tide is a tradition that goes back more than a thousand years.

The first written record of viewing the Qiantang Tide dates back 1500 years.

Over the years, it grew in popularity.

A viewing pavillion was built for dignitaries and literati.

A noted 11th Century poet, Su Dongpo wrote :"How magnificent it is the Qiantang tide on the eighteenth day of the eighth lunar month!

In the 12th Century, when the Song Dynasty located its capital in the city now called Hangzhou, the tide became more well known.

For years after, viewing the tide continued to be a spectacular event.

Over the centuries, the course of the river changed, and the best viewing spot was in Lao Yancang and Yanguan Town of Haining. The Qiantang tide then became also known as the Haining Tide.

In the first half of the 20th Century, ships were found to be a more convenient way to reach Haining. The event was so popular that people would camp out a few days before the strongest tide.

Today, viewing the Qiantang tide is one of the chief tourist attractions of Zhejiang Province.
