Tours to Japan canceled

日本执意“购买”钓鱼岛,引发国人愤怒

Several major Shanghai travel agencies have decided to stop organizing tours to Japan and advised Japan-bound (前往日本的) tourists to make other plans, due to the Diaoyu Islands issue.

The Shanghai China CYTS Outbound Travel Service Co. Ltd. (上海中青旅出境旅游服务有限公司)hashalted tour packages to Japan and will gradually stop receiving tourist bookings to Japan after the National Day holiday, according to Liu Xin, the company’s deputy general manager (副总经理).

The Shanghai branch of the China Travel International Ltd. (中国国际旅行社有限公司上海分部) also said it was advising people who wanted to visit Japan to change their plans.

In fact, tourists had already begun to ask for cancellation of their tours to Japan because they were worried about their safety. Tensions have been especially high between China and Japan since the Japanese government “bought” the Diaoyu Islands.

Last year, more than 100,000 tourists from Shanghai went to Japan on organized package tours. That made Japan the second most popular tour destination for travelers from the city, only after Thailand

At the same time, China Eastern Airlines (中国东方航空公司) canceled a meeting with Yuhei Sato, governor of Fukushima County (福岛县知事). Sato had flown to Shanghai to talk about the reopening of the Shanghai-Fukushima flight route. The route was canceled after the earthquake in March 2011.

In addition, two floats from Japan were absent from this year’s opening night of the Shanghai Tourism Festival (上海旅游节).

Also because of the Diaoyu Islands issue, this year’s Shanghai International Marathon, which will be held in December, will no longer be using the name of a Japanese sponsor in its title.
