影片开始是男主角维克特在画蝴蝶，然后将其放生，似乎为结局打下隐喻。19世纪末，家里是暴发户渔业大亨的维克特，将要与没落贵族的女儿Victoria【维多利亚】结婚，他们俩都不愿意结婚，可又不好违抗父母。好在彩排的那天，两人一见钟情，可是维克特由于紧张，在婚礼彩排上错误百出，逃了出来。在阴森恐怖的小树林里，他因练习婚礼仪式而误将戒指戴到了形似树枝的骷髅手指上。随后，一个死去的少女出现了。她被Victor【维克特】感人的婚礼誓言触动，便决心跟随他。她追上了想要逃跑的维克特，带他去了地狱。这下才知道，这个叫Emily【埃米莉】的死去少女被贪财的恋人杀了。维克多惊魂甫定，为了获救，他推说自己需要让父母知道自己与艾米丽的婚姻，于是，在骨奈克老人的帮助下两人回到阳间，而维克特试图去见维多利亚，艾米丽很伤心，维多利亚虽想救维克特却无能为力，而那个杀艾米丽的人，以为维多利亚有钱，就向维多利亚求婚——他想图财害命，却不知维多利亚比他还穷。维克特的仆人死后来到阴间，告诉他维多利亚要结婚了，心灰意冷的维克特无意听到了骨奈克老人说他必须死才能娶艾米丽，艾米丽哭着不答应，他被感动了，同意了婚事，与阴间的其他人来到了人间，死人纷纷和亲人相见。可是婚礼上，艾米丽看到维多利亚很伤心，就阻止维克特喝下毒酒，把他放弃了，可是那个坏蛋，知道维多利亚没钱，又不想看到维克特高兴，就和维克特对打起来，可是维克特拿的是叉子，打不过，艾米丽就为他挡住了刀，那个人误把维克特的毒药当成酒喝了，中毒身亡。对二人相爱而满足的艾米丽看了他们最后一眼，化成千万只蝴蝶飞向月亮。
