Chile’s president says the death toll from Saturday’s 8.8-magnitude quake has topped 700. The deaths are expected to be highest in Concepcion, a city of more than 200,000 near the epicenter.

President Barack Obama’s doctor says the commander in chief’s first medical checkup since he took office finds the 48-year-old is in excellent health. He also recommends that Obama continues smoking cessation efforts.

Western Europe has been battered by a violent storm that has killed more than 50 people. The majority died by drowning in France. Others were hit by parts of buildings or trees and branches that were ripped off by high winds.

A hungry wild panda broke into a home in China’s Sichuan Province. The bear was found sitting in the house, eating pig bones rather than a usual diet of bamboo.
