The festive spirit of the Chinese new year is spreading around the world. Overseas Chinese are celebrating from Bangkok and Rio de Janeiro to North America. Though far away from their mother country, their celebrations are just as authentically Chinese.
Chinese, Thai artists warm Bangkok
Artists from China and Thailand presented a night of culture to an audience of over 2-thousand in Bangkok. From traditional folk music and Peking Opera to contemporary dance, a wide array performances set a festive mood for the coming lunar new year. A highlight was "Swan Lake" interpreted through Thailand's traditional puppets. This is the sixth such collaboration between the governments of China and Thailand, and its bigger and more varied than ever. The performers come from all across China. They will tour Thailand till February 25th.
Overseas Chinese celebrate in Brazil
Overseas Chinese and local Brazilians have converged on the metropolitan cathedral square in Sao Paulo. Young performers from local Chinese troupes and Zhejiang Wuju Opera theatre are putting on authentic performance including face changing, martial arts and dragon and lion dances. The event is co-organized by the Chinese embassy and Consulate-General in Brazil, the Association of Chinese in Brazil, the Association of Chinese Youth in Brazil, the Sao Paulo government and the Confucius Institute of the University of Sao Paulo.
Chinese new year party hits California
Overseas Chinese got a head start on Spring Festival celebrations in Pasadena, California last weekend. The 2010 American Chinese Spring Festival Gala was hosted by two American students studying in China. Both demonstrated their fluent Chinese. The young male host has appeared in a number of Chinese TV and films. He sang a song for the party. Chinese art troupes and locals staged song and dance acts, instrument performances, Chinese cross talk, and short sketches. The staff of the Consulate-general in Los Angeles also presented a chorus for the celebration.
