More than 700 former Tamil Tiger rebels are back with their families. The former fighters had spent months in rehabilitation camps following the country's decades-long civil war, which ended last year.

A special reunion ceremony, joined by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, took place at a camp where more than one-hundred thousand war refugees are being housed.

A dozen former Tamil fighters got to see their families again for the first time in months.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka President, said, "The terrorists led you astray and the suffering you endured as a result is beyond words. We will give you employment for your skills and you must start lives anew."

About 700 former Tamil fighters, including 98 children, were recently released.

The rebels say they were taught the Sinhalese language and other skills at the rehabilitation centers.

Their recreational activities included sports, singing, and television.

Fomer Talim Fighter, said, "I feel I have been in the dark not knowing what's happening in the outside world. Now I must become a good citizen, and I am determined to give my children a good education and make sure that they grow up as good people."

More than 12-thousand rebels or suspected rebels were sent to rehabilitation camps after the fighting ended.

The number of people living in the camps peaked at some three-hundred thousand.
