Wedding gift from parents

So eye-catching and so elegant, Her Majesty's necklace collection is among the finest in the world. This opulent collar, the Ruby and Diamond Floral Bandeau, was a wedding gift from her parents. The intricate piece is set in silver and gold, in an unusual V-shape and features several sizeable rubies.

A missing link to King Canute

Queen Alexandra's Dagmar necklace started life as a lavish gift, made by the Danish court jeweller for Princess Alexandra's marriage to the Prince of Wales in 1863. It contains 2,000 diamonds and 118 pearls set in gold. Originally, it also included a splinter of wood that was supposedly a fragment of the True Cross and a piece of silk from King Canute's grave.

A necklace... and a brooch

The George VI Sapphire necklace, worn here with matching earrings and an eye-catching diamond encrusted collar to a state banquet in Algeria in 1980, hasn't always looked like this. In its original form, the necklace had 18 sapphire clusters. Preferring a shorter chain, she had four links removed by royal jeweller Garrard in 1952, and turned the largest cluster into a pendant to hang from the centre. It has a pin at the back so it can also be worn as a brooch.

Kate and a sign of royal approval

For his wedding gift to Princess of Elizabeth in 1947, the ruler of the Indian state invited the young bride to select two pieces from Cartier. Rather than have anything commissioned, she selected a necklace and tiara from existing stock. Made from diamonds and platinum, it features a single, double-drop pendant and 13 rectangular-cut diamonds. In 2014, the Queen loaned the necklace to the Duchess of Cambridge and was seen as being a sign of Her Majesty's approval.

A rare outing for the Kent Amethysts

A necklace that was designed to make a statement, the Kent Amethysts belonged to Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent, and were left to the Crown on Victoria's death in 1901. The necklace is part of a matching set, including three brooches, earrings and hair combs.

A versatile favourite, with a 22-carat diamond

This weighty diamond pendant was created for Queen Victoria in 1858 and has been since worn by every female monarch for their coronation. It has 26 stones: 25 in the necklace, plus the 22.48-carat Lahore Diamond. It's versatile and is seen at formal engagements as well as more relaxed events, such as this banquet in Finland in 1976.

A priceless picture with Charles and Anne

The Queen adores pearls. She's said to like them because they are modest yet elegant and go with almost every outfit. Unusually, she wore pearls on her wedding day - the same two-strand necklace she is pictured wearing here, in an intimate portrait with Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

At last, a glimpse of gold

The Queen rarely wears gold, preferring silver or platinum for her everyday jewels, so this gold and emerald necklace is something of a curiosity in the royal collection.
