[Amidall the job losses], theres one category2 (of worker) that the economic disruption has been good for: nonhumans3.

The president began to speak amid the crowd’s acclamation.

Amid the good signs for the economy, came a worrying trend in manufacturing, however.

2. category n.

There are different categories of books in the library.

还原的话即the economic disruption has been good for is nonhumans.

[From self-service checkoutlines at the supermarket to industrial robots armed with saws and taught to carve2 up animal bodies in slaughter-houses3], these ever-more-intelligent machines are [now] not [just] assisting workers but [actually] kicking them .

Holman, the analyst, said mobile self-checkout will have a huge impact on the future of retail.

MSN: Welcome valued customer ... to more self-checkouts]

2. carve v.

Tom carved the figure of Venus from a piece of wood.

So it makes no sense to carve out a legal exception for smartphone searches.

3. slaughter vt.

Himmler knew a lot about how to terrorize and slaughter civilians, but nothing about military affairs.

CNN: Private Ryan was a hero, but there were bums, too]

The workers slaughter thousands of cows each day.

The heartless slaughter of animals for food disgusted the vegetarian.

Automation1 isn’t [just] affecting factory workers, [either]. Some law firms [now] use artificial intelligence software [to scan and read mountains of legal documents], work (that previously2) was performed [by highly-paid human lawyers].

Over the years our life has changed a lot with automation.

It hopes to avoid duplication, increase automation and introduce new business and asset management systems.

2. previously adv.

Previous to our being there, there was an earthquake in the area.

They have opened a previously unimaginable array of possibilities in both developed and developing countries.

Robots continue to have an impact [on blue-collar jobs], and white-collar jobs are under attack [by microprocessors] 1,” says economics professor Edward Leamer. The recession [permanently 2] wiped out 2.5 million jobs. U.S. gross domestic product has climbed back to pre-recession levels, [meaning were producing [as much as before],] [only with 6% fewer workers]. [To be sure], robotics are [not] the only job killers (out there), [with outsourcing stealing far more jobs than automation].

2. permanently adv.

I hope to get a permanent job here.

Many earthquake survivors worried that the authorities were trying to permanently move them out.

Jeff Burnstein, {president of the Robotics Industry Association}, argues that robots [actually] save U.S. jobs. His logic: companies (that embrace1 automation) might use fewer workers, but thats [still] better [than firing everyone and moving the work overseas].

The term “mankind” embraces men, women and children.

Mr. Lee has repeatedly said North Korea should embrace China's style of economic reform.

[WSJ: Kim Jong Il Meets Chinese Leaders]

Its [not] that robots are cheaper [than humans], [though often they are.] Its that theyre better. “[In some cases] the quality requirements are [so] exacting [that [even if you wanted to have a human  1,] you couldn’t,]” Burnstein says.

1. Have a human do the job,找别人来做,比如have someone’s hair cut,是找别人帮自己剪头发。

Same goes for surgeons 1, (whore using robotic systems [to perform an ever-growing list] (of operations)) – not [because the machines save money but because, ^thanks to the greater precision of robots^, the patients recover [in less time] and have fewer complications 2,] says Dr. Myriam Curet.

2. complication n.

They do not have the capabilities to treat this complication here.

Right now, somewhere on our planet, someone's mother is dying from a complication of pregnancy or childbirth.

Surgeons may survive the robot invasion 1, but others (at the hospital) might not be [so] lucky, [as iRobot], maker of the Roomba, {a robot vacuum2 cleaner}, has been showing off Ava, (which could be used [in a hospital].) And [once youre home,] [recovering], Ava could let you talk to your doctor, [so theres no need [to send someone] [to your house].] That “mobile telepresence” could be useful [at the office]. [If youre away [on a trip],] you can [still] attend a meeting. [Just] connect [via videoconferencing software], [so your face appears on Ava’s screen.]

Tens of thousands of people have died in Iraq since the US-led invasion of March 2003.

BBC: Iraq violence, in figures]

2. vacuum n.

The information firm was busy vacuuming up data from the far corners of the world.

He imposed the speed of light in a vacuum as the limit of any speed.

Is any job safe? I was hoping to sayjournalist”, but researchers are [already] developing software (that can gather facts and write a news story.) Which means that [a few years from now], a robot could be writing this column 1. And who will read it? [Well], there might be a lot of us (hanging around) [with lots of free time] [on our hands].

In his first column, he asked why there was such widespread disillusionment with global free trade.
