Ser Waymar met it with steel. When the blades met, there was no ring of metal on metal; only a high, thin sound at the edge of hearing, like an animal screaming in pain. Royce checked a second blow, and a third, then fell back a step. Another flurry of blows, and he fell back again.
威玛爵士举起钢剑迎敌。当两剑交击，发出的却非金属碰撞，而是一种位于人类听觉极限边缘，又高又细，像是动物痛苦哀嚎的声音。罗伊斯挡住第二道攻击，接着是第三道，然后退了一步。又一阵刀光剑影之后，他再度后退。
When the blades met, there was no ring of metal on metal; only a high, thin sound at the edge of hearing, like an animal screaming in pain.这里的主句是there was no ring … 和（there was ）only .. 这两个句子组成并列句，主谓一致，所以省略后面的there was。like接插入语，对a high, thin sound 进行补充说明。而when 引导的是时间状语。
checked,这里check非常形象，本意是find out，这里表示再次确认。形象地描写了这个刺耳的声音再次响起。
blow，作动词时是吹风的含义，而作名词则表示坏的效果，bad effect, that an action or event causes difficulty or sadness for someone。描绘出了Waymar勉强招架的画面。
flurry,是描写一阵慌乱，a time when there is suddenly a lot of activity and people are very busy。如果有一天突然有点忙乱时，你就可以这样说，The day started with a flurry of activity.
flurry还可以作量词，形容一阵风雪，或一阵风雨。
Behind him, to right, to left, all around him, the watchers stood patient, faceless, silent, the shifting patterns of their delicate armor making them all but invisible in the wood. Yet they made no move to interfere.
在他左右两侧，前后周围，其余异鬼耐心地伫立旁观。它们一声不吭，面无表情，盔甲上不断变化的细致图案在树林中格外显眼。它们迟迟未出手干预。
shifting, shift的含义是移动，转移。这里描绘出异鬼铠甲上的图案在不断变化。电脑键盘上shift键，也相当于转化。由于这个图案是自己在不断变化的，所以用现在分词的形容词词性。
delicate，这个词的含义是精美、精致，同时也比较脆弱，容易损坏。以后形容你的女神长得好，就不仅仅有pretty, beautiful可以用了，你可以对她说，You have delicate features.
but invisible in the wood,这句话需要好好理解一下。but,这里是介词，和except同义，指除了… 之外，前后两部分是相反的。invisible指不可见的… but invisible in the wood. 是指除了在树林里隐形之外，和前边那些图案不断变化的情况相反(一般来说，移动的东西容易被发现)。再看一个栗子：All but one are here. 是说All are here, but one is not here.也就是说，那些异鬼是不可见的，即使那些精美的图案在不停地变幻。虽然but和except有相同的含义，但是but只能在不定代词引导下使用，no-, any-, every-, all, none, what, who, where。比如The window is never open except in summer. 这里就不能使用but。
interfere，指干预，介入，和meddle是同义词，这里表示本和某人不相关，却试图去影响或者改变事情本来的发展，有管闲事的意味。
