该电影原著为英美儿童文学经典之一《纳尼亚传奇》（The Chronicles of Narnia），由英国作家C·S·路易斯在1950年代所著，是一套七册的奇幻儿童文学。故事的开始讲述佩文西家的四个小孩——彼得、苏珊、爱德蒙、露西偶然进入了一个称为纳尼亚的异世界，并在那里经历过一连串的冒险的故事。一颗从异世界带来的种子（苹果）被埋在花园里长成了一颗大树，这棵大树后来被飓风刮倒，又被造成了衣橱，然后又引领了这四个小孩子进入这个 神奇国度的不同时期，七册的图书每一本互有关连，但亦可独立阅读。
