1. a baker‘s dozen
A: All in all, how many students are there in your dorm?
B: Ah, don't remind me of that. There are eight.
A: You've got nothing to complain about. I know in some colleges a baker's dozen share one room.

2. a bird in the bush
A: I heard Cornell has given you an offer. Congratulations! How come you don't look quite happy?
B: Well, I'm still hesitating. I'm waiting for Harvard, but Cornell has a deadline, and I'm afraid to end up with nothing. It's after a bird in the bush.
A: Right. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

3. a bolt from the blue
A: I heard Henry didn't pass the final exam, is it true?
B: Yeah, it is. Unthinkable, right? It must have been a bolt from the blue to him.
A: I wonder why? He was always the best!

4. a chance in a million
A: Hello, I want to apply for a university-owned apartment. Do you think I may possibly get one for the coming semester?
B: Well, I'm afraid you have only a chance in a million. There are already many applicants waiting.

5. a clip on the ear
A: There has been great uproar yesterday in the dorm.
B: What happened?
A: Cathy said something about Jamie's figure. and Jamie gave her a clip on the ear.
B: She could have done worse. That's why I told you to never mention anything like "fat" to her.

6. a country mile/beat someone by a mile
A: John told me you won the race, and he came in second.
B: Yeah, it was really exciting.
A: John said it was really close.
B: No way! I beat him by a country mile!

7. a demon from work
A: You know what, Bryan has started working in the dining hall.
B: Oh my God, Doesn't he need any rest?
A: Yeah, considering his own study and his work as a teaching assistant.
B: He is nothing short of a demon for work.

8. a far cry from
A: I've at last finished my research paper.
B: Oh, really. Do you mind I have a look at that?
A: Of course not. There you go.
B: What? You call this a finished research paper? It's a far cry form that.

9. a knight in shining armor
A: Harris has become a knight in shining armor at school.
B: How's that?
A: He was seen giving that notorious Big Mike a good lesson for bullying a youngster.
B: Wow, then he surely deserves the admiration.

10. a labor of love
A: I can't believe your Mom spent all this time putting together a care package for you and mailing it.
B: Yes, but it was a labor of love.

11. a month of Sundays
A: Have you got the apartment you applied for at the start semester?
B: Haven't yet. They said I'm still on the waiting list. I have been waiting for a month of Sundays already. It's going to drive me crazy.

12. a pawn in the game
A: Don told me you were elected to the student council.
B: Yes, that is true.
A: You should be able to make a lot of great changes around here, then.
B: No, I'm just a pawn in the game.

B: Congratulations! All these years' hard working finally pays off. It must be a red letter day for your families.

A: My roommate always made me annoyed. It's so hard living with her.

15. a square deal
A: Hey, man, I think we've got to change the simple way we pay the utilities.
B: How's that? Isn't half-and-half fair?
A: Not at all. You see, you watch twice as much TV as I do. Is that what you call a square deal?

16. a vote of thanks
A: How's the welcome party going?
B: Pretty good! We started by giving a vote of thanks to Dr. Meador, who organized the whole thing, and then began talking with others and eating and drinking.

17. aboveboard
A: All these awarding procedures are aboveboard; there's no cheating going on.
B: That is a well-said claim, yet how can you prove it?

A: Have you studied for Prof. Smith's exam?
B: Yes, I have been studying for weeks. I heard her exams are really hard.

A: And to add insult to injury, as a teaching assistant, I will be teaching two classes at the same time.
