A little-noticed trend is spreading in many of world's emerging economics, more and more people are getting divorced. Many countries saw rasing divorce rates since 2007, and rates have climbed dramatically in China over the past few decades.

As far as I'm concerned, the raising divorce rates mirror significant social changes in these countries where the inequality of gender has been greatly reduced. With an increasing number of women have been well-educated, they become more financially-independent and have more choice in a relationship. And as divorce becomes more common and acceptable to the public, it brings less hurt to these individuals who pursue it. What's more, divorce itself, although heartbreaking mostly, but sometimes isn't always a bad thing for an unhappy couple. It empowers people, especailly for women, to walk out from a bad marriage as well as improve their lifes.

The increase of divorce rate is one of the many social changes which comes with economic development. What I find interesting is how the divorce rate is calculated. I have always thought that the divorce rate is the ratio of divorces filed compared to marriages filed in a given period, usually a year. Recently, I saw there other ways to calculate the divorce rate: divide the number of divorces by the total population. So, when comparing divorce rates between countries, it is important to make note of how that percentage or ratio is calculated.
