-Why do you even date her, anyway?
-She’s hot. It’s a guy thing.
-But she’s so awful.
-Hey, you know, you could use the front door. And Mom can’t see me. She thinks I’m staying at Dad’s. Dad thinks I’m at Mom’s. In two days they both think I’m going away to school. That is the beauty of divorce.
-Where are you going?
-London for a couple of weeks. Yeah, my band got a slot in a music festival there.
-OK, what are you gonna do about school?
-Yeah, I was kind of hoping you could help me with that. Could you just, like, pretend to be Mom, call Illyria, tell them I’m sick? Something that sounds like it would last for two weeks, like mad cow.

这些动词都指采用虚伪的或误导的表象。
1.Pretend 经常暗示一种徒劳地或明显地去愚弄或欺骗:
“My bedmate pretended to be asleep” (George W. Cable).
“我的枕边人假装睡着了” (乔治·W·凯布尔)。
2.Assume 有可能——但是并不必然地——意味着不诚实,不诚心或欺骗:

4.Simulate 强调外表的假装或近似现实的形式:

-Except for the voice, mannerisms, the breasts, the mentality and...
