Two firefighters have died as they tackled a blaze that broke out early on Friday morning in a shopping mall in Pinguoyuan in western Beijing.

Dozens of fire engines were sent to battle the inferno, which was put out after more than 6 hours. Witnesses said some explosive materials such as gas pipes were in the dining area of the shopping mall, and that the fire first started at a McDonald’s restaurant inside.

The shopping mall is a 4 storey building covering an area of 30,000 square meters. Bus routes around the area have been diverted and some roads have been closed. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.
