On day 7 of the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, gold medals are on offer in the men’s 3-meter springboard. Representing China were He Chong and Qin Kai.

After two rounds, He was top with Qin two places below in third. But things didn’t go according to plan in round three. He’s entry was not clean at all. Graceful through the air but his legs were going too far over on entry, and that moved him to third overall.

Things were even worse for Qin Kai who was attempting the same dive in round three. Almost the exact opposite for Qin, whose entry was all wrong beacuse his legs weren’t over enough. That dive pushed him down to the 10th.

Moments later things got better for the Chinese. You can tell how difficult this dive is by the amount of time He Chong takes to perfrom it. But he flies through the air and enters the water perfectly, moving up from third place to second with a score of just over 89 points.

Then He moved into the lead with his fifth effort. Again perfect through the air and so little splash with his entry. He won the event with a combined total of 544 points. It’s his third successive gold in this event. Evgeny Kuznet-sov took silver while Yahel Castillo of Mexico claimed bronze. Qin Kai came fifth overall.
