Astronauts on board the Shenzhou-10 spacecraft have taught a lesson from space to millions of schoolchildren through a live video feed system. The astronauts conducted basic physics experiments in the orbiting space lab module, Tiangong-1. They displayed various physical phenomena in a zero-gravity environment.

Greetings from space have opened a new chapter in China’s education history.

Wang Yaping, Shenzhou-10 Astronaut, said, "Hello, everyone. I am Wang Yaping. I will host the lecture today."

It is the county’s very first space lecture. And all eyes were on the female space teacher Wang Yaping and her two other crewmates.

The first part of the class was all about weight. This floating pose looked like a scene from a Chinese Kongfu movie. Audiences were amazed by this rarely-seen phenomenon.

Wang Yaping later did various experiments to show what happens in zero gravity. A simple pendulum motion and a gyroscope demo showed the difference between the space and ground.

She also created a water membrane to explain the surface tension impacts on liquids in space.

Wang Yaping, Shenzhou-10 Astronaut, said, " I did it! The knot is attached to the membrane. It proves just how tough the membrane is."

In Beijing, about 330 students attended the class and interacted with the astronauts via video calls.

Song Xinke said, "It’s very interesting. The experiment that impressed me a lot is the water balloon. The phenomenon is very beautiful. We have not gained enough knowledge to explain it. So I want to learn more after the class."

Liu Yuezhang said, "I feel very excited about this class. I have lots of questions and the astronauts are answering our questions. They teach us a lot of knowledge."

Teachers also had their own thoughts after the space lecture.

Mi Qi, Physics Teacher, High School Affiliated to Renmin University, said, "This class not only motivate the students exploring the space and astronomy, but it can also courage the students to explore the general science."

China’s very first lesson from space was visually captivating and thought-provoking. The experiment is sure to be an inspiration for the youngsters eager to explore the unknown. And gain a greater understanding of the cosmos.
