Not only the period dramas are popular among foreign viewers, but also the marital arts series and war-themed series. From my point of view, the reason why these Chinese TV dramas are so popular among foreign viewers is that they reflect the cultural landscape of modern China, and also the traditional Chinese culture.
However, due to the huge gap between Chinese and Western culture and value, it is still hard for Western audiences to appreciate Chinese TV dramas, and the shows are failing to break into the European and American mainstream markets.
