The Mexico sporting community is remembering a trailblazer that has been lost way too soon. The country’s first ever female Olympic gold medallist has died. Soraya Jimenez, passed away after a heart attack at the age of only 35.

She was considered a national hero after becoming the country’s first woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She captured gold in Sydney in 2000 in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting category. The Mexican weightlifter, was battling various health problems and had just one lung. Jimenez once told a Mexican magazine that she had a weakened immune system and also had problems with her left knee, which had been operated on 14 times. Jiminez, succumbing to a heart attack at the young age of 35.
