A fascination for speed is part of our nature, and the world’s first ever high-speed rail, which operates in extreme weather conditions, is about to set new limits in China’s northeast.

The Harbin-Dalian high-speed line will link key cities and squeeze the journey time to as little as 3 hours. But how will these trains cope with the variation in weather conditions between Harbin’s harsh winters and the high summer temperatures of Dalian?

Gao Baijiang, maintenance engineer of Harbin-Dalian high-speed rail, said, "Hot air from these yellow blowers on the ground will ensure the snow and ice under the train melt quickly, and the train will undergo regular service."

And it’s equipped with a special braking system.

Gao also said, "Unlike the original brake discs, the high-speed train is equipped with anti-snow brakes that are able to operate even in snowy and icy conditions."

The drivers of these trains have been selected from among thousands of regular train drivers. Each of them chosen holds an accident free record for no less than 500,000 km. The job also requires the drivers to undergo great physical demands.

Ren Jie, Harbin-Dalian high-speed train driver, said, "The physical requirements are very strict, they almost match the standards required of an airline pilot. Drivers must have a medical certificate for eyesight and have no heart condition."

The completion of the Harbin-Dalian high speed rail shows that, just like the train’s speed, the Chinese HSR network is growing at breakneck pace.
