Mr Dirscherl, 48, said: 'During mating season, male toads hold on to everything that looks or feels like a female toad.

The breeding season for the common toad lasts from early February until early May, according to the RSPCA. Each spring, toads may be seen migrating in large groups and over distances of a kilometre or more to reach their pond and breed.
