Flammable oil-like material carried on board by a passenger triggered Monday's bus fire in Shanghai that left three dead and 12 injuries, police said Tuesday.

The police are not able to specify the nature of the oil, saying further investigation is underway.

Two female victims were Shanghai natives, but the identity of the third man remained unknown, according to police.


The fire broke out at 9 a.m. Monday when the route 842 bus was in Huangxing Road in Yangpu District, in northeast Shanghai.

The fire was put out within half an hour. Firefighters estimated there were about 50 passengers on board the bus.

上海市公安局人士5日下午表示，经过初步勘查，5日上午9时许发生的公交车火灾系有人携带易燃物品上车所致。目前，警方正在对相关情况作进一步调查。

5日上午9时许，上海市公安局110指挥中心接报，杨浦区黄兴路靠近国权路附近一辆842路公交车发生火灾。公安部门迅速调集消防局、交警总队、刑侦总队、杨浦公安分局等相关单位前往现场处置。在上海市应急联动中心统一调度下，卫生等部门迅速展开救援工作。消防部门在起火后半小时内将火势扑灭。截至下午6时，火灾造成3人死亡、3人重伤、9人轻伤。

火灾发生后，中共中央政治局委员、上海市委书记俞正声，上海市委副书记、市长韩正要求全力抢救受伤人员，尽快查明火灾原因，进一步做好善后工作。有关方面负责人赶赴现场指挥救险工作，并到医院看望慰问伤员。
