A jealous, evil queen wants to kill Snow White, so she hides with the seven dwarfs, who protect her. It's got everything: a poison apple, Prince Charming and true love's kiss. A genuine classic.

Beauty and the Beast

"Beauty and the Beast" (1991):

There are so many versions of the tale of a beautiful girl held captive by a monster, but this animated Disney version is almost certainly the best. Belle offers herself as prisoner after the Beast  abducts her father. To become human again -- he is actually a prince -- the Beast must make Belle fall in love with him. This will prove difficult; he's a little out of practice when it comes to dating. Truly romantic, a real gem.

Through a series of events, Shrek, accompanied by Donkey , must rescue Princess Fiona , who harbors a secret. Sequels have diluted the franchise, but when this came out its originality -- and its quality -- were stunning.

The results are ... less than ideal. But it's a fun tale, truly twisted. And no, despite how much it may seem like it, Tim Burton didn't direct -- but he did co-write the film and produce it.

"Coraline" (2009):

Coraline (Dakota Fanning), after moving into her new home, discovers a door to another world, a better version of the world she lives in. Or so it seems. Like "Stardust," it's based on a Neil Gaiman book, which means it's imaginative, inventive and, in this case, pretty scary in places. Which only makes it better.

Tristan Thorn makes a bet with Victoria that he can bring her a fallen star, so that she will marry him. He tries to retrieve it, but it turns out to be a woman, Yvaine  This leads to romance and adventure, as any fairy tale should, as well as a good performance from Robert De Niro, which by this time was no longer a sure thing.
