Rufus Wainwright于1973年出生于加拿大一个音乐家庭，父亲 Loudon Wainwright III 是知名七十年代民歌唱作歌手兼演员,母亲Kate McGarrigle 则是一名来自加拿大的歌手,而他的妹妹Martha Wainwright，亦是一名Folk-Pop歌手.他在六岁开始练钢琴，十三岁时随他的母亲、伯母Anna和姐姐Martha以The McGarrigle Sisters and Family为名开始巡回演出.1998年，受到Dreamworks Records青睐的Rufus,终于出版了他的首张同名专辑Rufus Wainwright,即被滚石杂志誉为"最佳新进艺人".2001年，为电影"史瑞克"演唱翻自Leonard Cohen的歌曲"Hallelujah"，随即发行了专辑‘Poses'，再度获得盛赞.2005年的"Want双碟计划"可说是Rufus最个人的音乐版图:'Want One'施展管弦乐古典音乐基底.下半章‘Want Two'以纯真慧黠游走于爱与寂寞、罪恶与牺牲之间.自幼习钢琴的他本身亦曾攻读古典钢琴.他的古典音乐造诣，已成为其歌曲里所不可或缺的素质.
