2004年雅典奥运会的火炬接力将是第一次真正意义上的全球火炬接力。奥运会的圣火将第一次在全球五大洲的土地上传遍。
奥运会圣火的采集仪式将在古老的奥林匹亚进行。在采集仪式之后，圣火将在伯罗奔尼斯传递七天。然后，圣火将开始它33个城市的全球之旅。而在七月九日，火炬将回到希腊，并将在希腊各岛屿以及内陆传递，于八月十三日在雅典的奥林匹克体育场结束他的漫长之旅。同时，这也将标志着2004雅典奥运会的开始。
希腊人也将尝到近水楼台先得月的甜头了。火炬将走遍整个希腊，给每一位希腊人以参与这一世界上最伟大庆典之一的机会。奥运会圣火将在希腊的54个辖区间传递。而希腊也希望借此契机向世人展示他们优美的自然景观和丰富的历史文化遗产。
希腊人将有机会参与和经历这一奥运盛事的前奏。在43天内，大约将有7700名火炬传递者在全国范围内，借助轮船，直升机和汽车来进行火炬传递。
2004雅典奥运圣火主题曲《PassTheFlame》(薪火相传)由希腊歌手依尼斯(Yinnis)、土耳其性感偶像塔肯(Tarkan)与阿拉伯第一女伶卡夏(Katia)三人共谱的主题曲率先为8月13日开幕的雅典奥运揭开序曲。
