Many elderly people in China’s remote villages still suffer from scarce resources, and for some of them, digital products such us cameras are simply out of reach. But one college student in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, has been shooting free portrait photos for older villagers in some of the province’s most remote villages, giving the elderly a chance to have their own pictures.

It’s 'picture delivery day’ for this small village located in Northwest China’s Gansu Province. Yuan Ke, a college student who lives in Lanzhou, is coming to Xuejia Village to deliver the pictures he took for the elderly last week-- for free.

The elderly in the village are all happy to see him. They say Yuan Ke and his pictures brighten up their day. Wang Xulian, a local villagers, says, "It’s such a good picture, I love it, I don’t own any pictures other than the ID photo, I really love it."

Shen Long, a local villager, said, "I’m really happy to have our picture taken, I can’t thank him enough."

Yuan Ke started shooting free portrait photos for these elder villagers not too long ago. His inspiration comes from his grandma, who passed away in 2010. It was not until the sudden death of his grandma that he realized the only picture he had left to remember her by is the one he took with his cellphone. He told us that his grandma loves that picture, and that he wishes he could have taken more pictures with her.

And now, he is taking pictures for elderly people just like his grandma. Yuan Ke, a college student, said, "A lot of elderly people living in villages like this pass away without leaving any pictures for their children and grandchildren. It’s really a simple thing to do, and we just need to start caring."

Last year alone, Yuan Ke delivered nearly 2,000 pictures he had taken for free to villages in Gansu. He says he will continue doing it as long as he’s needed. Yuan Ke may not be a professional photographer, but the joy his pictures bring to the elderly is still great.
