Williams had to cover up a tattoo and wear hip padding to play Monroe at 30, when she starred in The Prince and the Showgirl. Monroe had just married Arthur Miller and had to live in London for the duration of filming, when she met and became friends with young production assistant Colin Clark.

Dench plays famed British actress Dame Sybil Thorndike, who in turn plays The Queen Dowager in The Prince and the Showgirl. Though Thorndike had appeared with Olivier in stage productions before, the film marked her first time working with American actress Monroe.
