On Wednesday morning, Seoul’s new mayor held an unprecedentedinaugural ceremony from inside his own office. No lavish gathering, no expensive banquets, but a one-hour live broadcast streamed over the Internet.

Seoul’s new mayor appears in front of the camera, live. “Welcome, citizens, to the first online inauguration” he says. First, Mayor Park takes the viewers on a tour of his office. This is the moment when the Seoul mayor’s office is revealed to the public for the first time in over 60 years.

Park points to post-its decorating one side of the wall. He says Seoul citizens wrote their wishes during October’s mayoral race. The mayor says he looks at it every day to remind him of the voices of those he is working for.

A chair that reads “citizen-mayor’s chair” --- Park says he imagines a citizen is sitting in this chair when he works.

Tuesday’s inauguration was staged under the slogan “Every citizen is a mayor”. And the mayor emphasized the importance of welfare by saying “welfare is investment into humans and the future with the highest interest rate.

Over 74,000 people watched Park Won-soon sworn in as mayor on Wednesday. 5,100 people joined in to write supportive comments. The Seoul Metropolitan Government says up to US$ 35,000 was saved as a result of the new simplified format.

Kang Byrong-ho, Director of Info. Planning Division, Seoul Metropolitan Government said “The mayor bases his political philosophy on communication and participation. His inauguration day was a symbolic moment of promising hope and happiness for Seoul’s citizens.”

We went to the street to ask people their thoughts. Some felt the online live broadcast was revolutionary, while others thought only internet users benefited.

Joo Hyeong-Ik, university student said “I saw his inauguration ceremony online and thought he is more revolutionary and forward thinking than previous mayors. I also like how he takes citizen’s welfare seriously.”

Lee Hyun-Soo, university student said “I like how he tries to communicate with many people. But I also saw some public opinion that non-internet users may feel reverse discrimination. It may have been better to link the online inauguration with other media channels like television.”

After the 1-hour inauguration live-cast online, Mayor Park stepped outside into this square not far from the city hall to hold an offline meeting with those citizens who were unfamiliar with the online inauguration. Now Seoul citizens look forward to what new actions the new mayor will take next.
